Keeping food safe

saferfoodThese two lessons are designed to teach pupils about food preservation techniques and the growth of microbes.

The pupils will carry out different food preservation techniques and will predict the rate of microbe growth under different conditions of preservation.

During the first lesson the class will discus why foods deteriorate, watch a time lapse sequence of food rotting and a short cartoon of various food preservation methods (available on the CD-ROM|). Working in small groups they will set-up experiments using peas.

During the second lesson they will analyse the results of the experiments, see images of microbes magnified and hear of some of the latest research techniques being undertaken in this area. Details of three possible plenary activities are also included.
