Seeing Science
The Science and Technology Facilities Council| wished to take a new national initiative as part of its public understanding programme. To achieve this aim an independent panel of advisors working in the science education sector was set up. The recommendation of the panel was to provide a CD-ROM based teaching resource for the Ideas and Evidence strand of Key Stage 3 (11 - 14 years). The topics were chosen by LEA science advisors and the material was written by science teachers assisted by the advisors and Science and Technology Facilities Council staff.
It is intended that the programme will roll out in subsequent years to cover other ages. The CD-ROMs will contain everything needed for each lesson including teacher briefing notes, lesson plans, pupil worksheets, video-clips, animations and images, and in most cases homework. Most teacher briefing notes contain links to a published article on the research highlighted.
The aim of the initiative is to encourage more young people to study science and engineering at a higher level. The lessons will allow the pupils to compare the methods they use in the school laboratory to those used by professional scientists working in the laboratories operated by Science and Technology Facilities Council, and in the series of lessons on Space, to explore how current thinking has been formed.
This web site was produced to disseminate the resources produced for the seeing science CD-ROM to a wider audience.
N.B. We aimed to include all of the CD-ROM's resources on this website, however, due to copyright restrictions on some resources, it has been necessary to omit some of the video clips. Some animations that were too large for use over the internet have also had to be omitted or provided at a low quality to enable on-line use. The images used on this website were designed for use online and may not be of print quality. Print quality images and the omitted resources (indicated in the relevant lessons) can be obtained from the seeing science CD-ROM.
The seeing science CD-ROM is available FREE OF CHARGE from the Council Communications Group|.
